Ram Dass

A friend of collaborator of Timothy Leary in the 60s, Richard Alpert travelled to India where he received the name Ram Dass and went on to write the best seller Be Here Now (1971) and become an important spiritual teacher.

Ram Dass

Ram Dass was born Richard Alpert. Before teaching at Harvard University, Dass attended Tufts University as an undergraduate, received a master’s degree from Wesleyan University and received his doctorate in psychology from Stanford University.

After accepting a professorship at Harvard, Dass began research on the Harvard Psilocybin Project where he met Timothy Leary. Together their research in to psychedelic substances created a counterculture movement in the United States that would have far reaching impact on social and political developments in the 60’s and 70’s.

In the 90’s Dass openly expressed his bisexuality as an opportunity to assert his own self-awareness. He currently resides on Maui where he continues work on his project, The Love Serve Remember Foundation.
