“Beneath depression are basically traumatic experiences.
From our perspective, that’s a symptom that we have seen most frequently
changed. Very profoundly, we have seen people coming out of deep
depression lasting several years, sometimes after one session.”

Stanislav Grof

For over 50 years, Stanislav Grof has been at the forefront of psychedelic research and transpersonal psychology, highlighting the transformative potential of non-ordinary states of consciousness. His classic book LSD Psychotherapy remains the only comprehensive treatise on the subject.

After four years (1956-1960) of laboratory research with psychedelics – LSD, psilocybin, mescaline, and tryptamine derivatives – Dr. Grof spent seven years (1960-1967) as Principal Investigator of the psychedelic research program at the Psychiatric Research Institute in Prague, Czechoslovakia. Followed by seven years of research of psychedelic psychotherapy in the US, he runs the last surviving official research project of psychedelic therapy in the country at the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center.

From 1973 until 1987, he was Scholar-in-Residence at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California, where he co-developed Holotropic Breathwork with his wife Christina, a powerful form of self-exploration and psychotherapy that has since been used in workshops and professional training programs around the globe.
