Timothy Leary

A counterculture icon, Timothy Leary, began probing the edges of consciousness while a Harvard psychology professor in the early 1960s with Richard Alpert (now known as Ram Dass) through experiments with psychedelics. Leary became the LSD guru, challenging convention, questioning authority and as a result spawned a global counter culture movement landing in prison after Nixon called him “the most dangerous man in America”.

Leary started a student of psychology at the University of Alabama Leary and was drafted in the Army where he trained in psychometrics. Then he completing an MS at Washington State and earning a PhD from UC Berkley.

Eventually Leary went on to teach at Harvard University. His work in the Harvard Center for Research in Personality and the Harvard Psilocybin Project led to his personal discovery of psychedelic substances. This is where Leary would develop his most famous ideologies (including: “turn on, tune in, and drop-out”)  This is also where Leary first met Ram Dass.

At the end of his life, Leary had a final conversation with Ram Dass concerning the nature of life and death, and the existence of human consciousness before succumbing to prostate cancer in 1996.
